Linguists observe that we make words for what we value... And the more words we have to describe a concept, the more nuanced that language’s understanding of that concept. How many words does Sanskrit have to describe Enlightenment? Nirvāṇa, Samādhi, Mokṣa, Nirguṇa, Kaivalya, Anuttara Saṃyaksambodhi... The list goes on!
Yoga itself is a word that means both the practice and the aim of practice. So what does it mean to
“practice yoga” with the promise of something mystical, transcendental, and luminous floating just beneath the surface? What does this mean as a householder/mom/brother/friend/artist/community member?
On one hand, these words are out of reach... born out of a culture a world away from Pemberton Valley... and yet, most of us have a sense that something is there.
What might enlightenment mean for us? What does practice mean for us? Come help sort this out. We are, after all, the blind leading the blind.
